The Dufferin OPP responded to an early morning shooting at a commercial plaza on Riddell Road in Orangeville, Ontario, on March 25, 2026. Officers arrived at the scene near Caledon-East Garafraxa Townline around 4:20 a.m. and confirmed that nobody was hurt during the incident.
Investigators have since arrested one suspect and identified a white sedan, possibly a Honda, that was involved in the event. The OPP Central Region believes this was a targeted shooting connected to a string of ongoing extortion investigations in the area. This commercial plaza is a major local shopping hub that houses businesses such as Sobeys, McDonald-s, and Mr. Lube.
Since December 2023, police have investigated over 45 extortion cases in the region where people receive calls or texts threatening violence unless they pay large sums of money. These crimes have mostly targeted members of the South-Asian community in Dufferin and Caledon. Throughout 2024 and 2025, several other properties have been damaged by gunfire linked to these same threats.
The Dufferin OPP Crime Unit is currently leading the investigation with support from the OPP investigation branch and forensic teams. Police are asking anyone with security cameras or dashcam footage from the area to share it with investigators to help with the ongoing case.
