The misleading report falsely alleged that the local detachment commander, five senior officers, and 21 other officers had been arrested and that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had taken over local policing duties.
Following the circulation of these claims on April 1, 2026, the police received numerous inquiries from concerned community members. The Huron County OPP detachment has confirmed that these reports are entirely false. No state of emergency has been declared, no officers or municipal council members have been arrested, and local police operations continue to function as normal.
OPP West Region Sergeant Ed Sanchuk addressed the situation in a video statement, describing the content as inappropriate and irresponsible. While the article may have been intended as a prank, police emphasized that mimicking legitimate news reporting to spread false information can cause unnecessary panic and undermine public trust.
The police are reminding the public that even content presented as humour can have real-world consequences for community safety and confidence. Officials urge residents to verify information through official channels before sharing it on social media.
