Theatre Orangeville is closing out its 32nd season in Orangeville, Ontario, with the final mainstage production of the year. The comedy, titled The Wedding Party, is currently running at the historic Opera House located at 87 Broadway.
The production serves as a milestone for the organization, marking the end of what has been dubbed A Season of Wonder. It is also the first season led by the company’s new Artistic Director, Jennifer Stewart. Stewart took on the role following the retirement of long-serving Artistic Director David Nairn, who guided the theatre for 26 years and now holds the title of Artistic Director Emeritus.
The play, written by Kristen Thomson, is a comedy that explores mistaken identities and family dynamics at a wedding reception. The piece previously received a nomination for Outstanding New Play at the Dora Awards in 2017. As the season wraps up, the theatre is encouraging residents to book their tickets soon to catch the final performances.
Theatre Orangeville was founded in 1994 by Jim Betts. Performances are held in the Opera House, which was originally built in 1875 and restored in 1993. The organization continues to see growth, reporting that it sold over 25,000 tickets last year, representing a 25 per cent increase in attendance compared to the previous year.
