The region has received a large amount of snow over the past several weeks. As this snow melts, it can cause ice jams in local creeks and lead to water overflowing onto the banks, creating hazardous conditions for anyone nearby.
The authority is warning everyone to stay away from the edges of all water bodies, including rivers and the lakefront. Ice that may have seemed thick enough for walking or recreational activities is now unstable and could break apart without warning.
Parents and pet owners are encouraged to keep children and animals at a safe distance from all banks and waterways to prevent accidental falls. The combination of cold temperatures and fast-moving water can make it very difficult for anyone who falls in to get back to safety.
If you see a person or a pet fall into the water, the authority says you should not attempt a rescue yourself because the current and ice are too dangerous. Instead, call 911 immediately to get help from emergency professionals.
