A 17-year-old boy from Whitby is facing criminal charges after using bear spray during a fight at a school in Oshawa, Ontario. The incident happened at Grove School on February 26, 2026, leading to a full evacuation of the building due to chemical contamination.
According to the Durham Regional Police Service, officers arrived at the school on Simcoe Street South at approximately 11:45 a.m. Two young men were involved in a fight when one of them used the spray on the other. Both the victim and the suspect were treated for minor injuries and exposure to the chemicals.
Because the spray spread throughout the facility, all students and staff had to leave the building until it was safe to return. The teenager has since been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and administering a harmful substance.
Grove School is a specialized facility run by the Durham District School Board that provides classes for students who are also receiving mental health or behavioural treatment. Police officially announced the charges on March 6, 2026, following their investigation into the campus incident.
