The 164th Owen Sound Emancipation Festival took over Harrison Park on August 1, 2026, continuing a tradition that started back in 1862. It is known as the longest-running Emancipation Day celebration in North America, and this year’s event brought together community members, leaders, and visitors to reflect on the end of slavery and the strength of Black communities.
MPP Paul Vickers, who represents Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, was at the festival. He was elected on February 27, 2025, and he stressed that the day is a chance to celebrate the contributions of Black residents. Senator Bernadette Clement, the first Black woman to serve as mayor in Ontario when she was elected in Cornwall in 2018, took part in the Freedom Walk. That walk started at the Grey Roots Museum & Archives and ended at Harrison Park.
The festival commemorates the British Commonwealth Emancipation Act of August 1, 1834, which legally ended slavery across the British Empire. Canada officially recognized August 1 as Emancipation Day in March 2021. This year’s theme, ‘North Star,’ was meant to evoke the guiding light used by escaped slaves who traveled the Underground Railroad. Owen Sound was the northernmost stop on that secret route, and many freedom seekers settled here starting around 1830.
Events happened at Harrison Park, the main festival grounds, and at the Grey Roots Museum & Archives, where a Speaker’s Corner was set up. In Harrison Park, a Black History Cairn, unveiled on July 31, 2004, stands as a reminder of the area’s early Black settlers. Festival volunteer Angela Gunn described the gathering as “a reclamation of space. It’s restorative. It’s family. Reunion. Community.” She added that bringing this history into the open is important so it can be celebrated and acknowledged.
The Owen Sound Emancipation Festival began as a simple picnic organized by descendants of freed slaves. It expanded into a multi-day festival in 2006. The 2026 event featured live music and Inspirational Sunday, mixing solemn remembrance with community celebration. Police were present at the event, which is standard for a large public gathering.
