Port Alberni, BC, is in for a hot and hazy week as temperatures climb to 30°C on Monday, August 17, 2026, and are expected to reach 31°C by Thursday and Friday. That’s well above the seasonal normal of 26°C, according to Environment Canada.
The hot weather comes with a 30 percent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms Monday afternoon. Hazy conditions are expected to stick around through the day as wildfire smoke continues to affect the region, The Weather Network reports.
British Columbia remains under a provincial state of emergency because of wildfires. The Pearce Lake wildfire has burned over 159,300 hectares, part of a total of 429,400 hectares scorched across the province as of August 16. Smoke from these fires is causing air quality concerns in many areas, including Port Alberni.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbours, and watch for air quality advisories. Heat affects people differently, and some are at higher risk. According to Vancouver Coastal Health, those at higher risk include older adults aged 60 and over, people who live alone, those with pre-existing health conditions like diabetes or heart disease, pregnant people, infants, young children, and people who are homeless or marginally housed.
For people vulnerable to heat, health risks can increase when indoor temperatures go above 26°C, and may become very high above 31°C. BC’s new three-tier colour-coded heat alert system, launched in 2026, uses yellow, orange, and red warnings to communicate heat risk to the public.
Port Alberni has seen extreme heat before. During the 2021 heat dome, the city set an all-time high of 42.2°C. In August 2023, another heat wave brought temperatures of 37.5°C. Cooling centres may open at community facilities such as the Echo Centre if conditions worsen.
