The Pacific Rim School District announced Jaslene Atwal as its new superintendent and CEO, starting September 1, 2026. Atwal, already a familiar leader in Port Alberni, will take over from Peter Klaver, who is retiring after 29 years with the district. Her first day comes just before students return for the new school year.
Atwal currently works as the director of instruction in human resources and health and safety for the district. She previously held an administrator role at the Southeast Kootenay School District before moving to Vancouver Island. Her background gives her insight into schools in the Alberni Valley and beyond.
Klaver has spent nearly three decades serving local students and families. He moved into the superintendent job in January 2025 after serving as assistant superintendent. His departure marks a significant change for the district, which covers schools in Port Alberni, Bamfield, Tofino, and Ucluelet.
The Alberni District Secondary School shared the news with families and community members. More details are posted on the district’s appointment announcements page. Residents can also visit the district office at 4690 Roger Street in Port Alberni for information.
With the leadership change happening before fall classes begin, families can expect a smooth transition as Atwal steps into her new role.
