The City of Port Alberni, British Columbia, released documents on March 9, 2026, showing its wastewater treatment facility is not meeting provincial standards after receiving a warning letter that identified 15 areas of concern. The provincial government issued the formal warning on February 9, 2026, noting that the status of several other parts of the facility could not be determined at the time.
Despite the issues raised in the letter, city officials maintain that the current situation does not pose a risk to the environment or the health of local residents. Andrew McGifford, the city’s Interim Chief Administrative Officer, has previously noted that many of the problems are administrative and part of the learning curve that comes with operating the facility, which underwent major upgrades in recent years.
The city has stated that these concerns can be resolved through better staff training and improved planning. Port Alberni is continuing to work on its long-term sewage plan to ensure the facility meets all government regulations in the future while protecting the surrounding environment.
