Travelers heading to the west coast experienced significant delays on April 6, 2026, after a semi-truck crash on Highway 4. The Port Alberni Fire Department responded to the incident on the route, which occurred in an area frequently prone to traffic challenges.
Because Highway 4 serves as the only paved route connecting Port Alberni to Tofino and Ucluelet, any disruption on this corridor frequently causes major travel backlogs. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure notes that this single east-west route is essential for residents and visitors alike, making the highway particularly sensitive to accidents.
Drivers may be facing additional travel interruptions due to ongoing maintenance projects. Roadwork, which involves the replacement of a culvert between the Alberni Summit and Elkford Road, is currently in progress and is expected to continue until April 24, 2026.
This incident follows other recent mechanical and traffic challenges on the same route. Earlier this year on March 5, 2026, a semi-truck fire at the brake check on the area known as The Hump highlighted the persistent risks associated with the highway’s steep and challenging terrain.
