Prince Rupert residents can stay active for free this June as the city takes part in the 2026 ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge. The Recreation Department has partnered with a dozen local organisations to offer no-cost recreation activities all month long, giving people plenty of ways to get moving and help the community compete for the title of Canada’s Most Active Community.

The challenge runs from June 1 to June 30, 2026, and the winning community receives a $100,000 grand prize to support local facilities and programming. This marks the second year in a row Prince Rupert has joined the nationwide initiative, which last year saw over 670 communities across the country logging physical activities in hopes of taking the top spot.

“This initiative is a great opportunity for our community to come together, stay active, and celebrate healthy living,” said Brian Millis, Manager of Recreation for the City of Prince Rupert. “We’re so grateful to the many community partners stepping up to offer new events, and for the long-time events like those offered by Special Events at Seafest that bring people together every year.”

The full list of participating organisations includes Northern Savings Credit Union, Prince Rupert Port Authority, Prince Rupert Special Events, Prince Rupert Public Library, Friendship House Association of Prince Rupert, Sweat Rebel Fitness, Prince Rupert Lions Club, Change Makers Education Society, Costa Yoga School, Prince Rupert Golf Club, Kaien Trails, and Skeena Kayaking. A complete calendar of free events is available on the City of Prince Rupert website.

The Community Better Challenge is presented by Novo Nordisk and funded in part by the Government of Canada. Residents, schools, and organisations can register throughout June to track their physical activity and help Prince Rupert’s standing in the friendly competition. For more information, the city has staff member Gaganpreet Grewal available as a public contact at (250) 624-6707.
