Organizers in Prince Rupert are asking for the public’s help to prepare for the upcoming Salmon Festival, which returns to the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre on May 22 and May 23, 2026. The event, which brings the community together to honour the annual salmon return, relies on donations to provide free salmon plates to all attendees.
The festival is hosted by the Gitmaxmak’ay Nisga’a Dancers & Society and celebrates Indigenous culture through traditional drumming, dancing, and crafts. As a non-profit cultural gathering, the event depends on the generosity of the community to operate and continue serving traditional food to guests.
The annual celebration has become a staple in Prince Rupert since 2013, with 11 editions held over the last several years. Following a two-year pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival returned in 2022 and continues to serve as an important cultural touchstone for Nations across northwest British Columbia.
Residents looking to support the event through salmon donations can contact the organizers for more information on how to contribute. Similar to the Prince Rupert Special Events Society, which manages various local festivals, the Salmon Festival operates through mutual support to ensure these community traditions remain free and accessible for families.
