Residents of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, are facing dangerous winter weather as a storm brings extreme cold and near-blizzard conditions to the region. Environment Canada issued a winter storm alert at 3:02 AM on March 3, 2026, warning that blowing snow and high winds will make travel hazardous through Wednesday.

Forecasters expect wind chill values to drop as low as -59°C on the morning of March 4, 2026. Winds coming from the northwest are expected to reach speeds of 50 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour, which can cause visibility to disappear suddenly.

Early morning observations at the Rankin Inlet Airport on March 3 already showed blowing snow and a wind chill of -52°C. The storm is also affecting the nearby community of Whale Cove, where similar conditions are expected to continue until the middle of the week.

The extreme weather could cause local power outages or damage to property. People are encouraged to stay indoors to avoid the risk of frostbite and to avoid any travel that is not absolutely necessary. Residents should check for updates from the airport and local government as the storm passes.
