The federal government and the Government of Nunavut have partnered to build up to 750 new homes in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, and other communities across the territory. This project aims to provide more public, affordable, and supportive housing for residents who are currently facing a shortage of places to live.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Nunavut are putting $480 million toward the project. The federal share of $250 million comes through a new agency called Build Canada Homes, while the territorial government is contributing $230 million.
To get the work done faster and keep costs down, about 30 percent of the new houses will be built using off-site methods. This means parts of the homes are constructed in a factory and then shipped to the community to be put together.
As part of the deal, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated will manage 25 of the units under a model led by Inuit. This follows a formal agreement signed by the groups on January 30, 2026, to help reduce overcrowding in local communities.
