Drivers in Regina should plan for a full road closure on McCarthy Boulevard this weekend as the City of Regina continues its essential work on a major sewer renewal project. The road will be closed between Mikkelson Drive and the railway tracks on April 11 on April 12, 2026.
This construction is part of a larger, multi-year effort to upgrade the city’s wastewater system. The current work involves relining a critical pipe that carries nearly 100 per cent of the city’s wastewater, a move the city says will extend the life of this infrastructure by about 50 years. This project is a key component of the broader Southwest Sewer System Upgrade, which includes building a 4.5 km long, large-diameter sewer line.
Carolyn Kalim, the Director of Water, Waste and Environment for the city, noted that these upgrades are vital for ensuring the long-term reliability of the sewer system for all residents. While the work is necessary, the city advises that construction will continue through late August 2026. Residents can expect ongoing lane restrictions in the area for the duration of the project.
Those living or travelling near the construction zone between Oriole Place and Mikkelson Drive should be prepared for some disturbances. Large trucks and cranes will be present, and bypass pumps and generators will be running 24 hours a day to maintain sewer service throughout the construction, which will result in some noise.
