Regina, Saskatchewan residents should keep umbrellas and weather radios close as Environment Canada calls for a 70 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms Monday afternoon into evening, with more unsettled weather expected Tuesday before skies clear midweek.
The risk of thunderstorms is highest during the late afternoon and early evening hours, according to the forecast. Winds from the southwest could reach 20 km/h, and the high temperature is expected to reach 18C. No weather alerts or warnings are in effect as of Monday morning.
Lead forecaster Brad Vrolijk of Environment Canada told CJME that while a widespread severe thunderstorm outbreak is not expected, isolated severe storms remain possible. The system is part of an active weather pattern that has seen several significant events across southern Saskatchewan in recent weeks, including a devastating hailstorm on June 9.
That storm pounded the city with hail the size of golf balls, leaving a trail of shattered windows, dented vehicles, and damaged roofs. Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) said preliminary damage estimates are approaching $80 million, with more than 10,000 auto claims and at least 800 property claims filed.
Tuesday will bring a 60 percent chance of showers with a risk of thunderstorms mainly in the late morning and early afternoon. Winds will shift to the northwest at 20 km/h, and the high will be a cool 17C. Clearing is expected Wednesday, with sunshine and warmer temperatures returning Thursday and Friday, when the high could reach 25C.
