The Royal Saskatchewan Museum is preparing for the summer season with the seasonal reopening of the T. rex Discovery Centre in Eastend on May 16, 2026. Located in the town of Eastend, the facility is home to Scotty, the world’s largest Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered.
To mark the opening, the centre is hosting special programming for the Victoria Day long weekend. From May 16 to May 18, 2026, the School’s Out! event will offer families various activities, including drop-in sessions at the Learning Lab and Field Station, as well as scavenger hunts. These activities will be available daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The T. rex Discovery Centre serves as a dedicated space to showcase the fossil record of the Frenchman River Valley and the Cypress Hills. It was here in 1991 that local high school principal Robert Gebhardt, alongside museum palaeontologists Tim Tokaryk and John Storer, first discovered the remains of Scotty. The specimen, which measures approximately 13 metres in length and weighs up to 8.87 tonnes, is now a primary attraction for the museum.
Visitors to the Eastend facility can access the centre on an admission-by-donation model, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. Those remaining in the city can also view a life-size cast of Scotty, which has been on display at the main Royal Saskatchewan Museum location in Regina since 2019.
