Regina, Saskatchewan is in for a warm up this week, with temperatures expected to climb steadily and reach 30°C by Friday, according to Environment Canada.
Monday will start off on the cooler side, with a high of 24°C and mainly sunny skies. But the mercury is predicted to rise as the week goes on, hitting 28°C by Wednesday before peaking at 30°C on Friday and staying there through the weekend. That is about five degrees above the normal high of 25°C for this time of year.
Forecasters say no weather alerts are in place, and mostly sunny conditions are expected throughout. The UV index is forecast to be 7, which is considered high, especially for Monday and Tuesday. Residents are advised to wear sunscreen and limit time in the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The warming trend comes as the Government of Saskatchewan notes that extreme heat events are becoming more common. Officials say heat-related illnesses are preventable by staying hydrated, seeking shade, and never leaving children or pets in a parked car.
While 30°C is toasty, it is well short of the all-time record for Regina, which was 43.3°C set on July 5, 1937.
