Spruce Grove drivers and shoppers will need to find new routes starting June 1 as the first phase of a major watermain replacement shuts down a stretch of King Street.
The City of Spruce Grove is launching the three-phase underground infrastructure project in the city centre, with work beginning between Agrena Road and Church Road. This first phase will replace a watermain and is the start of a construction schedule expected to be completed by the end of September.
Phase two will tackle the watermain from Church Road to First Avenue beginning July 1, while a third phase to replace a sanitary main between Brookside Avenue and Wellington Crescent will follow at a yet-to-be-determined date. The project is part of the longer-term City Centre Area Redevelopment Plan council approved on April 27, 2020.
Traffic on the busy corridor will face lane reductions, full road closures, and marked detours for the duration of the work. The city says access to local businesses will be maintained, and crews already started minor preparation work the week of May 25.
Once the underground pipes are in the ground, the city plans to work on the conceptual design of surface improvements in 2026. That work, leading to detailed design and construction in 2027, will include resurfacing the road, adding pedestrian upgrades, landscaping, and fixing intersections and signals along King Street.
