Residents in Spruce Grove, Alberta, will soon have more opportunities to shop for local goods with the addition of evening hours at the historic grain elevator site. The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society is launching a new Market @ the Elevator, which will begin operating on May 2, 2026.
The new market expands on the site’s long-standing tradition of hosting vendors. Currently, a farmers’ market takes place at the same location every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The market is hosted at the site of the 1958 Alberta Wheat Pool grain elevator, located at 120 Railway Avenue. This structure, which stands 95 feet tall and features 27 grain bins, is the last remaining wooden grain elevator on the rail line west of Edmonton. In October 2020, the site was officially recognized as a Provincial Historic Resource.
The agricultural society, a non-profit organization that has served the community since 1972, took ownership of the elevator in 1995 for $1 to prevent its demolition after it was decommissioned. Under the leadership of board president Teresa Bateman and other volunteers, the society continues to use the space to host events that connect residents with the area’s agricultural history.
