Spruce Grove saw a section of Century Road closed Sunday evening, June 21, 2026, after heavy rainfall flooded the roadway north of Grove Drive to Highway 16. Both northbound lanes and one southbound lane were shut down due to safety concerns for drivers and crews working at the scene.
City Drainage, Roads, and Utility crews had been responding to calls since 2 a.m. that morning, as weekend downpours overwhelmed parts of the community. The flooding also left substantial water pooling on roadways near No Frills and Vanderbuilt Common, where drainage was slower than usual.
Environment Canada had a rainfall warning in effect for the area, with up to 75 millimetres of additional rain expected before tapering off Monday. Across the Edmonton region, 50 to 100 millimetres fell over the weekend, making this one of the wettest Junes on record. The City of Spruce Grove also faced a water supply alert, as local wastewater systems reached capacity, similar to alerts in Edmonton, Stony Plain, and Beaumont.
The City’s stormwater system, which includes roughly 46 wet ponds and 7 dry ponds, is built to handle storms that have a one per cent chance of occurring each year. Crews worked overnight to pump water and clear problem spots. Century Road reopened by 5 a.m. Monday, June 22, after on-site teams confirmed it was safe for regular traffic flow.
