The Manitoba government is giving $165,550 to fix the roof at the Stony Mountain Community Centre. The funding was announced on August 10, 2026, to help the Rural Municipality of Rockwood restore the aging roof over the indoor ice rink and event space.
The money comes from the Manitoba GRO program, which helps rural municipalities pay for infrastructure projects. The RM of Rockwood will share the cost using its recreation reserve fund.
The building is about 50 years old and has a 35,000-square-foot roof. Over time, the joints have worn out, causing leaks and making the insulation less effective. The project will put closed-cell spray foam insulation on the roof and coat the metal surface with an aluminized polyurea membrane to stop the leaks.
Reeve Wes Taplin said the community centre is essential for local families. It’s used a lot by minor hockey and figure skating clubs, and it’s also the main gathering spot for socials, meetings, and events.
Heavy rain and flooding in June 2026 made the need for repairs more urgent. The roof problems were already known, but the storms showed how important it is to protect the building from further damage.
The work is expected to help the community centre keep serving Stony Mountain, which is about 12 kilometres north of Winnipeg. The province says this kind of funding supports rural communities by keeping key facilities safe and usable.
