The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has issued a water safety warning for Stratford, Ontario, as local rivers and streams remain high due to spring runoff. The notice is in effect from March 17 to March 23, 2026, and was triggered by melting snow in the northern parts of the region.
While water levels have dropped from peaks seen earlier in the month, they stay well above normal levels for this time of year. Officials say the water is moving fast and is very cold, making it dangerous for anyone who gets too close to the edge.
Residents are being told to stay away from all watercourses because the banks are currently slippery and unstable. Caregivers are also asked to keep children and pets away from the riverbanks to avoid any accidents in the fast-moving water.
The conservation authority is actively managing water levels using flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock. These efforts are designed to reduce the risk of flooding in areas further downstream as the spring melt continues.
This safety notice is intended to warn the public about hazardous conditions near the water rather than predict widespread flooding. Officials will continue to watch the river system closely until the runoff subsides.
