The City of Waterloo is reminding residents of safety requirements as Victoria Day approaches on May 18, 2026. Fireworks are permitted on private property only between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on the holiday.
This is the first Victoria Day since new local rules took effect in January 2026, which banned the sale of fireworks within city limits. While residents can no longer buy fireworks locally, they may still order them from online retailers. The city implemented these measures following a rise in community complaints, which reached 104 firework-related calls in 2024, up from 66 in 2023.
According to the City of Waterloo, anyone using fireworks must be an adult aged 18 or older. Officials are highlighting these guidelines to reduce the risk of injury and property damage, noting that Health Canada data shows nearly 30 percent of all fireworks-related injuries across the country happen during the periods surrounding Victoria Day and Canada Day.
Violating the city’s rules can lead to significant fines. The penalty is $1,000 for a first offence and $2,000 for a second offence. Residents who witness fireworks being used outside of the permitted time or in an unsafe manner can report the activity by calling 519-747-8785.
