A 33-year-old Waterloo man is in custody after a woman and her child were forced into a vehicle early Saturday morning, July 18, 2026, following a shooting in Kitchener.
According to the Waterloo Regional Police, officers were called to a home near Courtland Avenue and Hayward Avenue in Kitchener around 3:30 a.m. for a report of a man with a gunshot wound. The injured man had left before police arrived, but officers soon learned the suspect also forced a woman and her child into a vehicle.
Police found the vehicle a short time later near Weber Street and Albert Street in Waterloo. When officers tried to pull the vehicle over, the suspect ran away. With help from the police canine unit and the Emergency Response Team, the suspect was caught and arrested. Officers found a firearm inside the vehicle.
The woman and child were not physically hurt. The man who was shot was later found and confirmed to be safe. Police say everyone involved knows one another.
The accused faces multiple charges, including using a firearm in the commission of an offence – kidnapping, failing to comply with probation, and disobeying a court order. The man was held for a bail hearing.
