The Waterloo Regional Police Service launched its annual Chief for a Day contest on March 3, 2026, offering local students a chance to lead the police department. The program is open to youth in grades 5 to 8 across Waterloo, Ontario, who want to share their ideas on community leadership.
To enter the contest, students must submit either a video or an essay of at least 400 words that explains how they would make a positive impact in their community. All entries must be sent through an online form by the deadline on May 4, 2026.
The winning student will serve their day of duty in June 2026, which includes a full tour of the police headquarters. The junior chief will get to visit the police dog unit and explore police cruisers to see how officers work every day.
For the first time, the winner will also be invited to speak at the Hearts & Heroes Awards Gala on November 5, 2026. The student will present their winning essay to more than 700 guests during the event.
Police Chief Mark Crowell says the contest is an important way for the service to listen to the voices of young people. The goal is to build stronger relationships between the police and the community while encouraging interest in public safety careers.
