A 23-year-old Waterloo woman is dead after a straight truck hit her while she crossed University Avenue East at Marsland Drive on the morning of June 3, 2026. The Waterloo Regional Police Service said the crash happened at about 8:15 a.m. The truck driver, a 54-year-old Kitchener man, was not hurt, but police expect to lay charges.
The intersection was shut down for several hours while officers investigated, reopening around 12:30 p.m. Brad Niereisel, manager at Tire Team Centres near the corner, shared surveillance video with police and reviewed it himself. It showed the truck turning left from southbound Marsland Drive onto University Avenue as the woman walked with a green light. A passerby performed CPR on her for about 20 minutes until paramedics arrived, but she died from her injuries.
The police Traffic Services Unit is leading the investigation. This crash adds to a worrying number of serious collisions in the area. City data shows 71 pedestrian-involved crashes in Waterloo over a recent five-year span, and police have pushed for more traffic enforcement. In the 2026 budget, $1.2 million is set aside for a six-officer road safety team to crack down on speed, distraction, and other dangerous driving.
The Region of Waterloo has already flagged University Avenue for major upgrades through its Transportation Capital Program. The work is meant to fix worn-out pavement and add better crosswalks and other safety features. Anyone with dashcam video or who saw what happened is asked to call police.
