The Whitby Historical Society has rescheduled the 7th Annual Art in the Garden Festival at Lynde House Museum to Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., after Environment Canada issued an air quality advisory for the area and thunderstorms threatened the original July 18 date. The outdoor show and sale draws residents to the museum grounds at 900 Brock Street South.
The decision came as wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario drifted across southern Ontario, triggering poor air quality warnings for the Durham Region. Festival organizers said the safety of artists, guests, volunteers and staff was the top priority. The gathering typically features local painters, potters, jewelry makers and other artisans, along with live music and tours of the heritage kitchen garden.
Lynde House Museum, built circa 1812, is the oldest home in Durham Region and has been moved twice before settling at its permanent location in 2013. The Art in the Garden Festival is one of several summer cultural events run by the historical society, which was founded in 1967 to promote Whitby’s history and heritage.
Residents who planned to attend on the original date are being asked to note the new date of August 22. Admission details remain unchanged, and the festival will still run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the museum lawn.
