MP Ryan Turnbull and Mayor Elizabeth Roy have confirmed that a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Habitat for Humanity affordable housing project in Whitby, Ontario, will take place in the spring of 2026. This project is designed to help local families who may find it difficult to buy a home in the current market.
The new homes will be built at the corner of Hickory and Dunlop Streets on land donated by the local government. This land is valued at approximately $5 million and was provided to help increase the number of affordable places to live in the community.
The project is receiving support from a federal program called the Housing Accelerator Fund, which gave the town about $24.9 million to speed up the creation of new housing. This money helps the town approve projects faster and encourages more construction.
Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area will be in charge of building the units. The organization works to provide pathways to homeownership for families through partnerships and community support.
This upcoming construction is part of a larger plan to build over 650 new housing units in the area over three years. Residents can expect to see work begin at the site as the weather warms up this spring.
