The Town of Whitby is moving forward with a proposal for a new six-storey apartment building in the downtown core. A meeting is set for June 8, 2026, where local officials will consider removing a zoning restriction on the property located at 121 John Street East to allow the 27-unit project to proceed.
The Committee of the Whole will review the application, identified as file number DEV-11-26 (Z-05-26), at 7:00 p.m. inside the Council Chambers at 575 Rossland Road East. The town has issued a formal notice of intention to remove what is known as a holding symbol, a zoning tool used to pause development until specific requirements are met.
According to the Town of Whitby, the area is currently experiencing significant growth, with the local population expected to climb from approximately 140,000 to nearly 190,000 by 2031. This proposal follows other recent density projects in the downtown, including the Station No. 3 development.
The town has clarified that the June 8 session is not a statutory public meeting. As a result, rights to appeal the decision to provincial authorities are limited to the project applicant only.
