Students at Sigurbjorg Stefansson Early School in Gimli, Manitoba, recently participated in a Breakfast Picnic lunch event designed to provide a healthy midday meal in a social setting. The gathering, which took place in late February 2026, allowed children to eat together while learning about nutrition.
The menu featured a variety of breakfast foods, including French toast with syrup and sausages. To ensure a balanced meal, students were also served milk, apple wedges, and orange slices during the picnic.
Jan Olson organized and prepared the lunch with the help of volunteers Mrs. Peters, Ms. Hansen, and Mrs. Whittle. By turning a standard lunch into a picnic, organizers hope to help students feel more connected to their school community and improve their focus for afternoon classes.
The initiative is funded by the Evergreen School Division Nutrition Program, which supports special meals for local schools. These programs aim to reduce financial and time pressures for families while ensuring every child has enough to eat during the day.
This local effort is part of a province-wide move by the Manitoba government to expand school food programs. In 2024, the province invested $30 million to help schools provide consistent, nutritious meals to all students.
