The Government of Prince Edward Island started seasonal weight limits on public roads in Three Rivers, Prince Edward Island, on March 8, 2026. These restrictions, which began at 12:01 a.m., are meant to protect the road network while the ground is soft during the spring thaw.
The province puts these rules in place every year because road foundations are vulnerable to damage from heavy vehicles when the soil is saturated with water. By limiting how much weight trucks can carry, the government prevents significant damage that would otherwise lead to expensive road repairs.
For local transport operators and businesses, this means vehicles on many roads may be restricted to 75 per cent of their normal maximum weight. According to provincial regulations, special permits for extra-heavy loads are also limited to items that cannot be broken down into smaller pieces.
These changes often require trucking companies to use smaller loads or change their delivery timelines until the ground firms up. The restrictions will remain in effect until officials decide the roads are strong enough to return to standard operations later this spring.
