The #5 seeded Gimli Lakers senior boys basketball team secured a 71-67 victory against the Westpark Royals during a provincial tournament held in Gimli, Manitoba. This win on March 20, 2026, allowed the team to move into the final round of the consolation bracket at the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Provincial AA Boys Basketball Championship.
During the game against the team from Westpark School, which travelled from Portage la Prairie, player Dylan Maclean was named the top player of the match. The event was held at Gimli High School and was organized by athletic director Chad Heminger, who served as the tournament lead.
Following the win, the Lakers played Green Valley on March 21, 2026. Although the team lost that game 107-58 and finished sixth overall in the eight-team tournament, Gimli player Ashton Chartrand received the Players Choice Award.
According to Basketball Manitoba, Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute won the overall provincial title. This tournament marked a significant achievement for the Gimli program, which has a long history of local basketball success including a previous provincial title win in 1987.
