The Halton District School Board is working with Special Olympics Ontario to host a two-day Sports Festival for elementary students in Milton, Ontario. On March 25 and 26, 2026, hundreds of children with special education needs will gather at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on both days.
This festival is designed as a fun, non-competitive way for young athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities to try out sports and physical activities. It focuses on helping students develop physical skills and provides a simple way for the community to support active lifestyles. This program is part of the Special Olympics Ontario Unified Champion Schools initiative, which promotes inclusion for all students.
The Milton Velodrome, located at 2015 Pan Am Blvd, was originally built for the 2015 Pan Am Games at a cost of approximately 56 million dollars. It is currently the only facility of its kind in Canada and is owned and operated by the Town of Milton. While it is famous for professional cycling, the venue is also used for many different community sports and programs.
The local school board serves more than 67,000 students and 11,000 staff members across the region. Under its 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, the board has committed to making sure every student feels respected and included. This festival is one of the ways the district is working to remove barriers and celebrate the diversity of its students.
