The Stony Mountain Community Association is hosting a casino and wing night fundraiser to launch a new youth ball hockey program at the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex (VMSC) in Stonewall, Manitoba. This new sports initiative will provide weekly sessions for children from kindergarten through Grade 7 on Monday evenings.
Organizers at the Stony Mountain Community Centre are creating the program to offer more affordable local sports options for area families. Stony Mountain is a community of nearly 2,000 residents that shares many recreational facilities and resources with the nearby town of Stonewall.
While the Stony Mountain Minor Hockey Association currently runs ice hockey programs for children starting at the U7 level, this ball hockey league is a separate effort. It helps parents manage the high costs of youth sports, where registration and equipment for traditional hockey can often reach over 1,000 dollars per season.
Community events like this often receive support from Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, which provided more than 4 million dollars in sponsorship to local groups in 2024.
