Drivers in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, are facing significant road closures that began on March 25, 2026, to allow for the final construction of the Team Gushue Highway. These closures are expected to last until July 31, 2026, as crews work to complete the connection between Topsail Road and the area around Commonwealth Avenue and Brookfield Road.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has closed all ramps at the Heavy Tree Road Interchange on Pitts Memorial Drive. A portion of Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive is also closed from Ruby Line to Brookfield Road, with detour signs guiding people through Ruby Line and Southlands Boulevard, or via Ruby Line and Bay Bulls Road.
The provincial government awarded a $30 million contract to Bursey Excavating and Development Inc. to finish the highway, which was named after the curling team that won Olympic gold in 2006. The project has been in various stages of work for roughly 20 years and is now expected to be fully finished by late 2026.
Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker says the finished highway will help reduce the number of vehicles using local streets like Park Avenue and Smallwood Drive as shortcuts. The final phase includes a new roundabout corridor to help move traffic more smoothly toward the Southern Shore and the Goulds.
