The Mount Pearl Men’s Recreational Hockey League celebrated 50 years of community sport on March 28, 2026, marking five decades of local recreation at the Reid Community Centre.
Founded on November 29, 1976, the league has grown from its original four teams to a current roster of eight teams and 112 full-time players. The organization, which operates under CARHA Hockey, remains a staple for working men aged 37 and older. Due to limited ice time within the city, the league currently maintains a waiting list of nearly 50 people who hope to join the program.
Steve Macdonald, who has served as the league president since 2012, helped oversee the milestone event. The anniversary celebration was also attended by Paul Lane, the Independent MHA for Mount Pearl-Southlands and current Speaker of the House of Assembly. Lane has a long history in the community, having previously served as a city councillor and Deputy Mayor.
The league is known for its focus on friendly competition, utilizing a two-referee system and enforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy for fighting, which carries an automatic one-year suspension. Beyond regular season play, the league hosts the annual Easter Tournament, which began in 1979 and holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously running recreational hockey tournament in Newfoundland and Labrador. The organization has also been supported by its major corporate sponsor, Molson Coors, since its inception.
