Residents in Burlington, Ontario, are heading into the spring season with full access to a wide range of fitness, and social programs at the Skyway Community Centre. The facility, which opened its doors on September 20, 2025, serves as a modern hub for community activity in the city’s southeast end.
Replacing the former Skyway Arena, the new 58,000-square-foot building was constructed as part of a $40 million project. The Government of Canada provided a $1 million contribution toward the facility through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program. The centre’s design prioritizes sustainability by utilizing geothermal heating and electric equipment, which officials say reduces annual emissions by approximately 85 per cent compared to traditional facilities.
The centre is designed to be inclusive, featuring universal washrooms, scooter charging stations in the main lobby, and accessible pathways throughout the site. These accessibility features extend to the adjacent Skyway Park, which offers a natural playground, shaded gathering areas, and an upgraded baseball diamond with accessible dugouts.
Inside the facility, visitors can utilize an NHL-sized ice pad, a multi-use indoor track, and two community rooms equipped with kitchenettes. The space is also home to a public art installation titled Ephemeral Reverie by artist Xiaojing Yan, which uses coloured concrete to represent melting icebergs. Residents can visit the City of Burlington website to view current schedules for fitness classes, and other community programming now available for the spring.
