Milton Mayor Gord Krantz has officially announced his bid for re-election in the upcoming October 2026 municipal vote. Krantz, who has served as mayor since 1980, is now looking to secure his 22nd term as the town prepares for significant growth.
As Canada’s longest-serving politician, Krantz has been a fixture in local government for 60 years, first joining the council in 1965. In announcing his campaign, the 88-year-old stated that his goal remains to continue making a positive contribution to the citizens of Milton.
Krantz will face competition in this election, as Regional Councillor Sameera Ali has also declared her intention to run for mayor. Ali, who was first elected to the council in 2018, previously announced her campaign in December 2025, emphasizing the challenges that come with Milton‘s rapid expansion. With the town’s population of approximately 160,000 expected to nearly double over the next 20 years, the future of local infrastructure and services is expected to be a key focus for candidates.
Residents interested in running for office can participate in a free virtual information session on April 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The official nomination period for all council positions opens on May 1 and closes on August 21 at 2 p.m. Voters will head to the polls on October 26, 2026, with advance voting opportunities available from October 12 to 15. The upcoming race follows a notably close contest in 2022, where Krantz secured his current term with 49.51 percent of the vote, finishing roughly 995 votes ahead of challenger Zee Hamid.
