The City of St. Thomas is inviting residents, local businesses, schools, and community groups to take part in its annual community cleanup, which runs until May 12, 2026. This initiative aims to tidy up local parks, trails, neighbourhoods, and public spaces in recognition of Earth Day and the provincial Day of Action on Litter.
To participate, volunteers must register through the city’s online customer service form to select a specific time and location. The city has identified 13 areas for cleanup efforts, including Talbot Street, Sunset Drive, Orchard Park Trail, and the VA Barrie Trail.
Once registered, participants can pick up free supplies, including garbage bags and gloves, from the Environmental Services Department. The department is located on the second floor of City Hall. For those who have questions regarding safety procedures while collecting litter, Southwestern Public Health provides guidelines and support.
The provincial Day of Action on Litter, established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, is held annually on the second Tuesday of May. This year, the event falls on May 12, serving as a reminder of the environmental impact of waste. According to provincial data, Ontario residents generate nearly one tonne of waste per person each year, with approximately 70 percent of those materials ending up in landfills.
The city currently manages waste through a recognized program that diverts nearly half of all collected waste from landfills by using curbside compost collection.
