The Rural Municipality of Gimli, Manitoba, is returning to its regular meeting schedule following a cyber security incident that affected local operations in late April 2026. Official notices confirm that upcoming council and committee sessions are moving forward, including a Council Meeting on May 13, 2026, and a Committee of the Whole on May 20, 2026.
The municipality first notified residents of the incident on April 28, 2026, after a group known as Payload claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on April 27, 2026. The group threatened to release sensitive municipal data unless certain demands were met. As a result, the municipal office was temporarily unable to process bill payments, and residents were advised to make these payments directly at a bank. A council meeting originally set for the week of the attack was cancelled on short notice.
In response to the incident, the municipality hired a security firm to investigate the breach. While smaller municipalities can be vulnerable to these types of attacks due to limited technology resources, the Rural Municipality of Gimli has reported no active service disruptions to public works, emergency services, police, fire, or health utilities. Residents can continue to access meeting agendas and other official notices through the municipal website.
