Chestermere, Alberta, and the surrounding area in Rocky View County are bracing for a bout of heavy rain and strong winds, as Environment Canada has issued two yellow weather warnings effective Monday, June 1, 2026. The storms are expected to continue through Wednesday morning, bringing 50 to 100 mm of rain in total, with some spots possibly receiving up to 150 mm. Wind gusts up to near 90 km/h are forecast through Monday evening, raising the risk of downed trees and local utility outages.
The heavy rainfall started Saturday, May 30, and additional amounts of 30 to 70 mm are possible through Tuesday. The Environment Canada warnings cover areas including Chestermere, Dalroy, and Dalemead. Saturated ground from the rain makes it easier for trees to topple in the wind, which could also cause some property damage. As of midday Monday, the Calgary International Airport — the nearest reporting station to Chestermere — recorded light rain, a temperature of 7.2 C, and north-northwest winds at 41 km/h gusting to 61 km/h.
The Alberta River Forecast Centre is keeping an eye on stream flow levels. Officials are asking residents to stay away from flooded roads and watch for washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Water is expected to pool on roads and in low-lying areas, so drivers should avoid trying to cross flooded sections. Road conditions are being updated on Alberta 511.
Chestermere has seen serious flooding before. In July 2015, torrential rain and hail dumped more than 200 mm of precipitation in just a few hours, damaging over 300 homes. While the current storm is spread out over several days, the heavy rain and wind still pose a threat. This weather system is part of a larger pattern across Alberta, with rainfall warnings stretching from Fort McMurray to Lethbridge.
Residents can track the latest conditions through Environment Canada’s website and the Alberta Rivers app. Preparedness steps include securing loose outdoor items, staying clear of waterways during high flows, and having emergency supplies ready in case of power outages.
