A 95-year-old Burlington man has died after a collision on Old York Road, and a Georgetown man faces sexual assault charges involving a teenage girl, as Halton Regional Police released several public safety updates affecting Milton and surrounding communities over the May 29-30 period.
The fatal collision happened on May 30, 2026, at about 7:25 p.m., when a red Buick sedan traveling north on Old York Road left the road and hit a tree. The driver, a Burlington resident, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating.
In Georgetown, a 28-year-old man was arrested May 29 and charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual interference. Police say on May 25 at about 7:10 p.m., a teenage girl was walking near James Street and Draper Street when Sankalp Singh of Georgetown approached her, started a conversation, and sexually assaulted her. The Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit believes there may be other victims and is asking anyone with information to come forward. Singh was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.
Police are also asking for public help to find a 4-and-a-half-foot tall angel burial monument stolen from Lowville United Church Cemetery at 2707 Britannia Road in Burlington. The monument was taken sometime between May 16 and 22 and reported stolen on May 26. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
In an auto theft investigation, a 23-year-old Quebec man was arrested May 27 in East York. Thyson Joseph faces charges including theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Police said Joseph was already bound by two release orders for previous auto theft charges. A search of an East York home turned up an Acura sedan stolen from Montreal, an Acura SUV stolen from Peel Region, a reprogramming device, stolen licence plates, and other stolen property. A second suspect, 23-year-old Maika Lumumba of Quebec, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner noted auto thefts in the region are down nearly 60 per cent so far in 2026, with 77 vehicles reported stolen between January 1 and March 6, compared to 191 in the same period last year. But he cautioned the number is still too high, averaging nearly a vehicle a day.
In Oakville on May 29, a 43-year-old cyclist was seriously hurt when hit by a white sedan on Speers Road near St. Augustine Drive at about 6:51 p.m. He was taken to an out-of-region trauma hospital. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating that collision as well.
