The Town of Bonnyville will launch curbside recycling collection on October 1, 2026, a service residents have been asking for and one that will change who pays for recycling.
The program will be managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit leading Alberta’s move to Extended Producer Responsibility. That shift means the cost of recycling will no longer come from municipal taxes. Instead, the companies that make and supply packaging and paper products will foot the bill.
Residents will get bins and be able to recycle more materials than before, including glass containers, foam packaging, flexible and rigid plastic, cardboard, paper, and metal containers. The town previously did not have curbside recycling, but council unanimously backed joining the new provincial framework back in December 2023.
Mayor Elisa Brosseau said earlier this year that the program is something locals have wanted for a while. “Many residents have been wanting more curbside recycling pickup,” she said in March. Councillor Phil Kushnir also voiced strong support, saying council saw no downside and should join right away.
The Town of Bonnyville says the rollout is on track, though some final details are still being worked out. Residents can contact the Town of Bonnyville Public Works department for specific information as the launch date approaches.
