Leduc residents planning outdoor gatherings for Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21 may need to move celebrations indoors. Environment Canada is calling for cloudy skies and a 60 percent chance of showers, with a high of just 16 C, a far cry from the early summer warmth many were hoping for.
Monday brings a brief window of pleasant weather, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 25 C. The UV index will reach 7, which is considered high, so anyone spending time outside should use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and wear a hat and protective clothing.
The situation takes a sharp turn Tuesday, when a system is expected to bring rain beginning in the morning, along with a risk of thunderstorms. Northwest winds will pick up to 40 km/h with gusts reaching 60 km/h, and the high will drop to 17 C.
No weather alerts are in effect for the Leduc area, though the province experienced significant flooding in late May and early June after 50 to 100 millimetres of rain fell across parts of Alberta.
June is typically the wettest month of the year in Leduc, with an average of about 94 mm of rain. This year, The Weather Network is predicting a strong start to summer with above-normal temperatures across Alberta, along with periods of significant heat, though occasional pattern breaks could help keep drought conditions in check.
