Two St. Thomas teenagers are facing assault charges after a disturbance in the city’s downtown core earlier this week. The St. Thomas Police Service says a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were charged following an investigation into the Monday, June 15, 2026 incident.
Police say they were called to an address downtown for a report of an assault between people who knew each other. The case has been classified as intimate partner violence, a category that has been on the rise in the community.
Both teenagers went to police headquarters voluntarily, the service said in a media release issued Tuesday. They were processed and released on undertakings, which are promises to appear in court at a later date.
The charges come as St. Thomas continues to see an increase in intimate partner violence. According to the police service’s 2025 annual report, there were 782 such incidents reported that year, a 2.7 per cent jump from the 761 reported in 2024. Charges laid in connection with intimate partner violence rose even more sharply, by 29.5 per cent, with 399 charges in 2025 compared to 308 the year before.
Under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, young people charged with offences can be released on undertakings while they wait for their court dates. The police file number for this case is ST26011106.
