Milton residents have until August 6, 2026, to share their thoughts on a proposed new bus depot as the town looks to keep pace with its booming population and record-breaking transit use. The Town of Milton launched an online engagement portal on June 25, 2026, giving residents a chance to review plans, ask questions, and submit feedback on the proposed Transit Maintenance and Storage Facility.
The project would put a new bus storage, maintenance, and charging hub on town-owned land west of Highway 25 and south of Britannia Road, at the rear of the property that houses the existing Town of Milton Civic Operations Centre. The facility is being planned for a future switch to battery-electric buses and would house up to 70 conventional and specialized vehicles, along with bus parking areas and charging infrastructure. A new crossing of a tributary of Sixteen Mile Creek would be needed as part of the build.
“The existing facility is leased and at overcapacity. A new and expanded bus garage is essential for adding more transit service,” the town states on its Transit Master Plan page. Ridership in Milton has surged, topping one million rides in 2024 for the first time. Seven new buses were bought in 2025 to support service growth this year. The town’s population jumped from about 84,000 in 2011 to more than 132,000 in the 2021 census, and the province expects Milton to reach 335,000 residents by 2051.
Council endorsed a five-year transit plan in June 2024 that calls for a more than 150 per cent expansion of the system by 2041, aiming for one service hour per person. The plan identifies a purpose-built, town-owned bus garage as a key piece to make that growth possible. Federal and provincial governments have already committed roughly $7.1 million combined toward the estimated $39-million facility through the Investing in Canada infrastructure program.
The project is now in the pre-planning phase of Ontario’s transit assessment process, with a formal 120-day review expected to start in 2027. Details on the proposal and the online feedback form are available on the Town of Milton website.
