Garbage, recycling, and green carts will not be collected on Canada Day in Three Rivers or anywhere else on Prince Edward Island. The Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) posted a reminder on June 29 that curbside pickup is cancelled for the Wednesday, July 1 statutory holiday.
Residents whose regular collection day falls on July 1 should still put their carts and bags at the curb. Drivers will come by on Saturday, July 4 instead. This affects every household in Three Rivers and across the province.
All IWMC offices and Waste Watch Drop-Off Centers will be closed on Canada Day too. IWMC runs the Waste Watch Program for all homes and businesses in PEI. The program uses black carts for garbage, green carts for organics, and blue bags for recyclables. Over the past two decades, it has kept more than 1.3 million tonnes of material out of the province’s landfill.
This kind of holiday pause is normal for IWMC. The corporation adjusts collection schedules on statutory holidays, moving pickup to the next Saturday. Canada Day is a statutory holiday in PEI, affecting many government offices, businesses, and services.
Three Rivers is one of the largest towns on the island, with more than 8,300 residents as of the 2021 census. It was formed in 2018 when seven smaller communities came together.
