The Ontario government is handing the Town of Milton $8.4 million after the community blew past its housing target for 2025. The reward, announced July 9, 2026, comes through the third round of the province’s Building Faster Fund, a program designed to encourage municipalities that meet or beat their home-building goals.
Milton broke ground on 2,699 new homes last year, which is 28 percent more than what the province had asked for. To qualify for the cash, a town only needs to hit 80 percent of its target, so Milton’s effort easily cleared the bar. The $8.4 million will go toward key infrastructure to keep up with growth, including stormwater systems and road expansion.
“This commitment will help deliver essential infrastructure that supports housing in our growing community,” said Mayor Gordon Krantz in a statement from the town. Krantz, Canada’s longest-serving mayor, has led Milton since 1980 and has watched its population boom.
Milton is one of the fastest-growing communities in the country, with a 2021 population of about 133,000 expected to swell to as much as 400,000 by 2051. That kind of expansion demands an estimated 88,000 new housing units over the next few decades, or roughly 2,900 homes per year. Ontario has set a broader goal of 21,000 homes in Milton by 2031.
The Building Faster Fund, launched in August 2023, is a three-year, $1.2-billion pot of money meant to speed up home construction across the province. MPP Zee Hamid, who represents Milton at Queen’s Park, called the award a recognition of the town’s planning leadership. “This $8.4 million investment through the Building Faster Fund recognizes Milton’s leadership in planning for growth and building the infrastructure our community needs,” he said. “This funding will help create more housing opportunities for families, support a stronger and more connected community, and ensure Milton remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
The money comes as Ontario sees a broader uptick in construction. Housing starts across the province rose 17.2 percent between January and May 2026 compared to the same stretch in 2025, with 26,084 new units breaking ground. In addition to the Building Faster Fund bonus, the province is directing nearly $35 million to Halton Region through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, including over $10 million for Milton alone.
