Rimbey, Alberta is set for a day of widespread smoke, possible showers, and a risk of thunderstorms on Monday, July 20, 2026, according to Environment Canada.
The national weather agency says a few showers are expected to end near noon, with a risk of a thunderstorm in the morning. Widespread smoke will then settle over the area in the afternoon. The daytime high is forecast to reach 24 degrees Celsius, with a humidex of 29 making it feel warmer.
Early morning conditions at the nearby Leedale station showed a temperature of 13.7 degrees Celsius, high humidity at 97 percent, and northwest winds at 14 kilometres per hour. About 5 millimetres of rain could fall before skies clear.
The smoke drifting into central Alberta comes from wildfires burning in northern Saskatchewan, northeastern and southeastern British Columbia, northern Alberta, and the southern Northwest Territories. Air quality in the region has been affected, with Environment Canada forecasting moderate risk on the Air Quality Health Index for much of central Alberta, and smoke may reduce visibility.
Health Canada advises that wildfire smoke can cause mild symptoms like headaches, coughing, mucus production, and irritated eyes, nose, or throat. More serious effects can include dizziness, wheezing, chest pains, severe cough, asthma attacks, and shortness of breath. Those most at risk include people with heart or lung conditions, older adults, infants, young children, pregnant people, anyone working or exercising outdoors, and people in lower socioeconomic situations.
Residents are encouraged to limit time outside and keep windows closed while the smoke is heavy. Conditions are expected to improve by mid-week, with clearing skies and temperatures climbing toward 29 degrees Celsius by Thursday.
